According to a survey carried out in Latin America and the Caribbean in 2020, the prevalence of alcoholic beverages consumption decreased between the first months of the COVID-19 pandemic (March to June 2020) for both women and men, when compared to 2019. This could be partly explained by the distancing measures implemented by governments in order to limit the spread of COVID-19. During that period, establishments where people usually drink, such as bars and night clubs were closed, parties and gathering were largely reduced, and in some cases even sales of alcoholic beverages were prohibited.

The survey was carried out among residents of the 33 Latin American and Caribbean countries that did not travel abroad since March 15, 2020.
According to the source, the survey questions for both years inquired about usual consumption patterns in different locations, and from these questions, a variable that reflected the prevalence of drinking in each year was created.
