For Thanksgiving 2020, roughly three in four shoppers in the United States are hoping stores will be closed, so retail employees can have the day off or spend time with their families. Approximately two in five consumers stated they will not be buying from retailers who have laid off staff members as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
A shopping season like no other
A challenging period lies ahead for U.S. retailers, as customers have become increasingly mindful of expenses and cautious for health reasons. It is also a period that has demonstrated just how vital retail workers are, which is why consumers are keeping an eye on how they are treated by their employers. Retailers will need to be transparent and thoughtful if they wish to win over shoppers this holiday season.
The importance of Thanksgiving
Thanksgiving is a federal holiday in the United States and is celebrated by many: in 2018, approximately half of the U.S. population considered it a very important day. About seven out of ten Americans stated that to them, Thanksgiving is about spending time with one’s family and being thankful. As such, it comes to no surprise that the majority of the population spent the holiday at home or at a relative's place that year.
