Share of French Millennials who intend to buy a next-gen console 2020, by gender

After much waiting, November 2020 saw two next-gen video game consoles hit the market almost simultaneously to the delight of gamers around the world. Both the new Xbox and PlayStation models bring a new generation of gaming, aiming to reinvent the video game industry.

The next generation of gaming

The rivalry between Sony's PlayStation and Microsoft's Xbox is well documented and already spans several generations of consoles, and this comparison comes up at every launch. While almost one-third of French Millennials were willing to purchase a next-gen video game console, the new PS5 was the most sought-after console of this generation with almost 70 percent of purchasing intention.

A device for everyone

In 2019 alone, almost two million consoles were sold in France, reaching new heights thanks to video game franchises such as FIFA or Call of Duty, each iteration of which appears at the top of video game bestseller lists each year. However, consoles are not necessarily the first choice of French gamers in terms of gaming devices. Indeed, smartphones are the most common gaming devices, ahead of laptops and consoles, respectively.
