Between 2015 and 2022, the number of cinema admissions across Nigeria, Liberia, and Ghana experienced a considerable increase. In 2019, movie theaters in anglophone West Africa recorded over five million visits, more than double compared to 2015. However, due to the coronavirus pandemic cinemas were closed. They reopened only in Nigeria in September 2020. Thus, admissions considerably dropped in 2020, reaching only 1.7 million, about 67 percent less compared to 2019. Nevertheless, in 2022 the admissions increased again to 3.2 million.
Nigeria accounted for the largest share of revenue generated by the cinema industry in these three countries.
