Lionel Messi had as of March 2024 with more than 250 goals in international matches, which placed him above Neymar by around 110 goals as the all-time top international goal scorer from South America. During the last FIFA World Cup, Messi hit the back of the net seven times.
Who is next in line for the throne?
At the moment, only Neymar could challenge Messi’s record, not only because the Brazilian is second on the list but also because he is the only other active player among the top eight. Though the task is certainly not easy. Messi has been an active senior player since 2004, while Neymar has an ongoing professional career since 2009.
'La Albiceleste' during Messi’s reign
The World Cup title won by Argentina in Qatar 2022 is probably one of the most significant trophies for Messi, as it was the only big honor missing from his impressive list. Messi had already taken the Olympic and the Copa América title in 2021 and was also FIFA U-20 World Champion in 2005. However, the Argentine national team with Messi has not only had good times. The position of this South American senior squad in the FIFA World Ranking has fluctuated during his tenure. However, the team managed to finish 2022 in the second spot of the overall ranking.
