The production of seaweed in Zanzibar decreased to 8.8 thousand metric tons in 2020, keeping a downward trend. In the previous year, the semi-autonomous region of Tanzania produced 10.4 thousand metric tons of the crop. Seaweed farming is an important activity in the Tanzanian archipelago, being a key player in the region's exports. However, the production level has been decreasing in recent years, mainly due to increasing ocean temperatures.
