Xilinx's quarterly net revenue share FY2019 - FY2022, by end market

In February 2022, Xilinx was acquired by AMD for around 50 billion U.S. dollars.

Xilinx's generated more revenue from their aerospace and defense (A&D), industrial, and test measurement and emulation (TME) segment than any other segment during the third quarter of their 2022 fiscal year. The company generated 46 percent of their 1.01 billion U.S. dollars in revenue from this segment. The company made around 40 percent of the total amount in the Asia-Pacific region.

Xilinx’s business overview

Xilinx is a U.S. technology company that specializes in processor platforms, notably field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) and programmable system-on-chips (SoCs). FPGAs are a form of semiconductor device that can be reprogrammed after manufacturing, enabling them to be used for a range of applications. This feature is a contrast to application specific integrated circuits (ASICs) which are manufactured for specific design tasks. The SoCs designed by Xilinx – processors that typically incorporate a central processing unit (CPU), graphics processing unit (GPU) and memory – also allow for flexible programming.

Xilinx’s acquisition by AMD

The ability to reprogram products in this way has been cited as a key reason for Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) acquisition of Xilinx – a deal that has been valued at 35 billion U.S. dollars. AMD specializes in the development of computer processors, notably microprocessors, embedded processors, and GPUs. Analysts have suggested that the deal would allow the company to compete with other firms in supplying chips for data centers, particularly for cloud computing and machine learning activities.
