Health courses were the most popular among women regarding adult education courses in Germany with almost 85 percent opting to do this course, while men foremost signed up for school leaving qualifications. The German Volkhochschulen (VHS) are adult education centers. These are public institutions for adult and further education, where anyone can attend courses for a fee. Adult education centers are non-profit institutions and, in Germany, are assigned to the quaternary education area of continuing education. While their name does include the word Hochschule, which means university, they are not universities.
