In 2018, the consumption of smoked tobacco products in Tanzania was slightly higher among respondents in rural areas (seven percent) than those in urban residences (6.3 percent). According to the survey, Tanzanian smokers amounted to more than two million in the same year.

According to the source, "the data was weighted to conform to the latest available population figures from the 2012 Population and Housing census projected for 2017. The 4,797 unweighted cases corresponded to approximately 29.6 million adults aged at least 15 years in the country".
The source explains that "the smoked tobacco products assessed in the survey included manufactured cigarettes, hand-rolled cigarettes, kiko, cigars and shisha". It adds that "Current tobacco smoking includes both daily and occasional (less than daily) smoking."
