Number of e-money instruments issued on mobile phones in Japan 2014-2023
As of December 2023, the number of pre-paid electronic money instruments using contactless integrated circuit (IC) chips issued on mobile phones in Japan amounted to around 65.68 million. E-money payment instruments issued on mobile phones accounted for over 12 percent of the total number of e-money instruments issued in Japan. Japanese electronic money service providers offered their first pre-paid e-money cards in the early 2000s.
