Number of cattle in Algeria 2016-2018
In 2018, the cattle population in Algeria amounted to over 1.8 million heads. The total number of bovine animals in the country decreased by approximately 265 thousand in two years. As of 2018, the majority of the livestock in Algeria was constituted by sheep, while cattle accounted for only around five percent.
The limited number of cattle is not sufficient to satisfy the increasing demand for meat in the country. For this reason, bovine meat for the value of over 200 million U.S. dollars was imported in Algeria in 2018.
