The majority of adults in the United States would welcome efforts by the federal government to increase the number of firefighters who can put fires out. 75 percent of respondents to a 2020 survey, who identified as Republicans, 84 percent of Independents and 94 percent of Democrats supported greater incentives towards increasing firefighter numbers. By comparison, only a minority of the 999 respondents agreed that the government should offer to pay people money if they agree to move away from places where fires are likely to happen. Nearly seven million acres of land are burned due to wildland fires in the U.S. every year.
