Number of mobile money agents in Nigeria 2016-2019

In 2019, there were over 265 thousand mobile money agents enrolled in Nigeria. Compared to the previous years, the number of agents increased consistently. Mobile money allows you to receive, store, and spend money using a mobile phone. To make a deposit or get cash, mobile money systems use agents, people in key locations throughout the country, including remote rural areas, where to pick up or deposit money. Agents basically work as ATMs. Mobile money is creating employment as a large number of people are becoming mobile money agents. For instance, being an agent is the main business activity for some people, which means that their wage is mainly based on the commissions they receive. Some other people become mobile money agents in addition to their business activity like, for example, small shop keepers. Nigeria had around 15 million mobile money customers in 2019. The number of users of this service has experienced an increase in the last years.
