In 2020, the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic dramatically hit the tourism sector worldwide, as governments had to restrict non-essential travels to limit the spread of the virus. As of the third quarter of 2020, the revenue of the travel accommodation sector in Italy decreased by 37.5 percent, compared to the same period of 2019. In particular, the sanitary emergency had a major impact on hotel facilities than non-hotel accommodations. Between June and August 2020, the revenue of hotels in Italy dropped by almost 39 percent compared to the previous year.
