Water utilities in England and Wales released untreated sewage into English rivers 464,056 times in 2023. United Utilities discharged raw sewage into English waters 97,537 times over a period of more than 650,000 hours that year. Due to growing concern over the number of sewage discharges into English waterways, the UK government announced the Storm Overflows Discharge Reduction Plan. The plan aims to eliminate 40 percent of raw sewage overflows into rivers by 2040.
