In the fiscal year 2022, the Yamanote Line was the most frequented railway line of East Japan Railways inside Tokyo Prefecture, with around 812 million passengers boarding trains. It was followed by the Chuo Line, which had traffic of around 618 million passengers. The total number of passengers amounted to roughly 2.75 billion passengers. Public transportation in Tokyo is provided by numerous private, privatized, and government-owned companies. JR East is the leading train operator in Tokyo. It was incorporated after the break-up of the state-owned Japanese National Railways (JNR) in the 1980s, achieving full privatization in 2002.
