In fiscal year 2021, over 30 thousand people were full-time employees at community-based retail co-ops in Japan, which were under the umbrella of the Japanese Consumers' Co-operative Union (JCCU). While business endeavors for most consumer co-ops were centered around retail, co-ops in Japan also operated in other areas, such as insurance, housing, health and welfare, or education.
