Number of passengers carried via JR East in Tokyo, Japan FY 2013-2022
In the fiscal year 2022, the number of passengers carried via East Japan Railways Company (JR East) inside Tokyo Prefecture amounted to around 2.75 billion. Around 1.54 billion passengers used commuter passes, roughly 1.21 million regular tickets. Public transportation in Tokyo is provided by numerous private, privatized, and government-owned companies. JR East is the leading train operator in Tokyo. It was incorporated after the break-up of the state-owned Japanese National Railways (JNR) in the 1980s. The third public sale achieved full privatization in 2002.
