In the fiscal year ending March 31, 2023, the French rail company Alstom reported around 87.3 billion euros in order backlog, more than 50 percent of which is in Europe. The sudden leap in order backlog since 2019/2020 is in part due to the economic downturn linked to the Covid-19 pandemic. Order backlog refers to the situation when a company has workload or orders that exceed the current capacity to finish in a timely fashion.
