The OV-fiets, the bike sharing service offered by Dutch Railways, became increasingly popular in the Netherlands between 2012 to 2019. In 2019, approximately 5.2 million trips were made with the shared bicycles. The number of journeys by OV-fiets dropped in the first two years of the COVID-19 pandemic, when travel in the Nehterlands was partially restricted. Journeys fell to 3.1 million in 2020 and increased slightly to 3.4 million in 2021. Useage grew again in the following years and exceeded the previous peak in 2019, reaching 5.9 million journeys.
OV-fiets (loosely translated: public transport bicycle) is a bicycle sharing platform owned and controlled by the Nationale Spoorwegen (national railways), more commonly known as NS. There were around 300 OV-fiets stations in 2019, all located within train stations.

"OV-fiets" is a part of NS (Dutch Railways) and offers shared bicycles at depots next to important train stations. The bicycles can be returned at any depot in the same city where they were rented. Users subscribe to the service free of charge, but pay a fee per 24 hours of use.
