Sub-Saharan Africa has the largest number of mobile money users, the largest transaction volume as well as transaction value worldwide. As of 2019, Eastern and Western Africa held the largest share of registered mobile money accounts in the region, with 53 percent and 35 percent, respectively.
Mobile money allows a customer to receive, store, and spend money using a mobile phone. The service can be provided by banks, mobile money operators (MNOs), telecom companies, payment service providers, or similar.
