During the past decade, the expenditure of outbound tourism represented an average of 1.2 percent of the Dominican Republic's gross domestic product (GDP). In contrast, the inbound tourism expenditure corresponded to a continuously increasing share of GDP between 2011 and 2017, reaching nine percent in the latter year. The figure stood at 8.4 percent in 2019. The Dominican Republic was among the leading Latin American and Caribbean countries for international tourism in 2018.
