Share of grade level enrolment in schools India 2019, by type

In 2019, the share of enrolments in government schools reflected a decline with an increase in age. The share of primary enrolments in that year was about 57 percent while the share of higher secondary enrolments decreased to roughly 36 percent. By contrast, private aided schools saw a reverse of this trend. The share of enrolments for primary school children in private aided schools was almost five percent while for higher secondary enrolments the share was approximately 24 percent.

An increase in the share of enrolments in private schools with increasing age could be attributed to perceived performance of students in the school board examinations along with the willingness of the parents to invest in what they believe to be a higher quality of education.
