Around 1,820 patents related to the Internet of Things (IoT) were filed in 2017 in India. There were over 5,000 patents filed in the last 10 years, with the majority of these being filed in the past five years. Major reasons for the increase in the number of IoT patents were increased smartphone usage, a rise in the number of devices with in-built sensors, and declining technology costs.
