Morocco: water bathing quality in beaches 2014-2019

In the period between 2016 and 2019, Morocco had 461 testing stations in 175 different beaches of which 422 testing stations had enough samples to measure the quality of bathing water in these beaches. Out of this amount, in 179 stations, the water was ranked as of excellent quality. In 121 stations, the quality was good, and in 70, it was moderate. Therefore, in 87.68 percent of the stations, the water met the "NM 03.7.199" quality standards. In contrast, the water was declared of bad quality in 52 stations (12.32 percent), due to microbiological indicators.

Moreover, in the period from 2015 to 2018, 337 testing stations (87.31 percent) presented water quality from moderate to excellent. Between 2014 and 2017, 324 testing stations (87.1 percent) satisfied the conditions under the measurement standards.

The source choose the beaches according to importance, based on traffic of people to the beach, the site, and potential pollution risks. As of 2020, out of 461 water quality testing stations, 422 stations had enough samples to be able to measure the quality of the water based on the new Moroccan standard "NM 03.7.199"

As of 2014, the Moroccan authorities issued a new standard "NM 03.7.199" of monitoring and managing bathing water quality. It considers quality of water based on the results of the analysis of microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and Enterococcus), based on 95 and 90 percentile statistical values for the current year along with three previous season and comparing them to the following threshold:

Excellent water quality: Enterococcus - P95 ≤100 and Escherichia coli - P95≤250
Good water quality: Enterococcus - P95>100 & P95<200 and Escherichia coli - P95<500 & P95>250
Moderate water quality: Enterococcus - P95>200 & P90 ≤185 and Escherichia coli - P95>500 & P90<500
Bad water quality: Enterococcus - P90>185 and Escherichia coli - P90>500
