In Morocco, out of a total population of 34 million in 2016, approximately 26 million people were connected to the wastewater sewer system, while around 21 million individuals were connected to wastewater treatment plants. Due to the large number of people connected to the sewer system and treatment plants in 2016, there is the probability that wastewater outflow and the availability of treated wastewater for that year was also high. This notwithstanding, only 3.4 million people reused wastewater, which represents a potential for the wastewater reuse market in Morocco.
As of 2016, around 123 wastewater treatment plants had been built in the country, which increased the treatment capacity to 900 million cubic meters a year.

Wastewater is defined as used water, usually discharged into the sewage system, and which contains matter and bacteria in solution or suspension. Domestic wastewater is 99.9% water and 0.1% solids.
