As of March 2024, there were six different title holders in the professional Shogi world, four of which were honorary title holders. Shogi, also referred to as "Japanese chess", is a turn-based strategy board game similar to chess in many respects. It is mainly played in Japan and enjoys there considerable popularity for a board game. It has a professional scene with various leagues and title tournament matches.
