Attitudes of men and women toward domestic violence in Ghana in 2018 was such that most male and female respondents believed that a husband was justified in beating his wife for any of the reasons that were listed. For both men and women, the second most prevalent reason that was chosen was if the woman neglected the children. Domestic violence emanating from a woman burning food at home was the least of reasons selected by the respondents.
Some reasons that may account for the neglect of children as a basis for domestic violence among women in the Ghanaian society may include the importance of childbirth as well as women seen as the main household caretakers. Ghana's 2007 Domestic Violence Act (Act 732) identifies various forms of domestic violence including acts that result in economic, sexual, emotional, or verbal abuse.

Domestic violence is a gender-based violence defined as the abuse by one person against another in a relationship that is considered intimate such as marriage, dating, and cohabitation, or in a family relationship.
The source indicates that this assessment is based on "the attitudes of women and men age 15-49 years towards wife/partner beating by asking the respondents whether they think that husbands/partners are justified to hit or beat their wives/ partners in a variety of situations." It adds that "the purpose of these questions is to capture the social justification of violence (in contexts where women have a lower status in society) as a disciplinary action when a woman does not comply with certain expected gender roles".
