In accordance with the Paris Agreement, 197 member states of the United Nations set out Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) in a bid to meet global sustainability goals. The goal, in summary is to create a more sustainable, decarbonized world in which one nation, or person is left behind. A big part of achieving these goals, is the bid to become carbon net zero by 2050. The current Planned Energy Scenario set out by governments is a total of 90 trillion U.S. dollars to be invested between 2016 and 2050, with almost half going towards fossil fuels and other forms of energy.
According to The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), under the Planned Energy Scenario, CO2 emissions have been forecast to reduce only slightly by 2050. Under IRENA's Transformation Energy Scenario, in with 15 trillion U.S. dollars is added to the Planned Energy Scenario, carbon emissions could be cut from an estimated 33 Gigatons in 2050 to 9.5 Gigatons.

The source added the following information "The āTransforming Energy Scenario (TES)ā describes an ambitious, yet realistic, energy transformation pathway based largely on renewable energy sources and steadily improved energy efficiency (though not limited exclusively to these technologies). This would set the energy system on the path needed to keep the rise in global temperatures to well below 2 degree Celsius (Ā°C) and towards 1.5Ā°C during this century."
