In January 2019, Central American countries reported some of the highest electricity rates in the industrial sector in Latin America, out of 12 countries assessed in the region. Guatemala ranked first with an average of 254 U.S. dollars per megawatt-hour. El Salvador and Costa Rica trailed in second and third, respectively. On the other side of the spectrum, Paraguay reported the lowest price in the region. The South American country also reported the lowest household electricity price in the region.
