The world's total reserves of graphite amounted to 280 million metric tons in 2023. This represented a decrease of about 50 million tons from the previous year. China had the largest reserves of natural graphite worldwide in 2023, at approximately 78 million metric tons. Graphite is a native element mineral and a semimetal, comprised of a crystalline allotrope of carbon. One of its well-known uses is as the lead in pencils.
