In Italy, wholesale and retail trade as well repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles were the sectors generating the largest gross turnover. In 2017, the overall turnover of the 1.1 million enterprises operating in these sectors amounted to 970 billion euros. Manufacturing followed with a gross turnover of 965 billion euros and roughly 384 thousand companies.
