Greenhouse gas emissions from energy supply in the European Union (EU-27) were 43 percent lower in 2022 than they were in 1990. This was the largest percentage change in emissions of any EU economic sector during this period. This dramatic reduction is due to a transition towards renewable energy sources across the European Union, and a shift away from coal power.
Most industry sectors have experienced emissions reductions over the past three decades, except for transportation. As of 2022, domestic transportation emissions in the EU were 20 percent higher than they were in 1990.
