The Chinese loan approval index in the second quarter of 2023 had a value of 55.6 percent. Since the index value was over 50 percent in the previous two quarters, the heads of Chinese banking institutions estimated on average that the approval of bank loans was going to increase in the next quarter. Especially the demand for loans from small and micro-sized companies was expected to increase.

A diffusion index indicates the climate of the loan approval estimated by heads of banking institutions in the observed quarter. The index is derived by calculating the proportions of respondents whose "approval increased", "approval remained the same", and "approval decreased", assigning weights 1, 0.5, and 0 to them respectively. Finally, the average value is calculated and converted to percentage. Interpretation: Percentage of indicators that expect increasing demand.
