In the second quarter of 2023, the loan demand index of medium-sized firms in China had a value of 58 percent. It meant that 58 percent of the heads of the surveyed banking institutions on average estimated that the demand for loans would increase in the next quarter. The respondents suggested that the highest demand for loans in China would come from small and micro-sized companies. In contrast to that, the demand for loans of large enterprises was comparably low.

A diffusion index indicates the climate of the loan demand estimated by heads of banking institutions in the observed quarter. The index is derived by calculating the proportions of respondents whose "demand increased", "demand remained the same", and "demand decreased", assigning weights 1, 0.5, and 0 to them respectively. Finally, the average value is calculated and converted to percentage. Interpretation: Percentage of indicators that expect increasing demand.
