Quarterly overall loan demand index in China Q2 2018-Q2 2023

In the second quarter of 2023, the overall loan demand index had a value of 62 percent, decreasing by 14 percentage points compared to the same quarter of the previous year. The first quarter of 2021 showed the highest index value of the observed period. The highest demand came from small and micro-sized firms.

A diffusion index indicates the climate of overall loan demand estimated by heads of banking institutions in the observed quarter. The index is derived by calculating the proportions of respondents whose "demand increased", "demand remained the same", and "demand decreased", assigning weights 1, 0.5, and 0 to them respectively. Finally, the average value is calculated and converted to percentage. Interpretation: Percentage of indicators that expect increasing demand.
