In fiscal year 2018, the domestic sales volume of low-malt beer-style (happoshu) craft beer manufactured by microbreweries in Japan amounted to 3,869 kiloliters, representing a decrease from almost five thousand kiloliters in the previous year.
Happoshu refers to beer-like beverages with a malt content of less than 50 percent. Furthermore, beverages with a malt content over 50 percent, but not classified as 'beer' due to optional ingredients like fruits or herbs, are also classified as happoshu.

Including corporations with a capital of less than 300 million Japanese yen as well as corporations and individuals with less than 300 employees.
Excluding the five major breweries Asahi Breweries, Suntory Beer, Sapporo Breweries, Kirin Brewery, and Orion Breweries.
