According to a survey conducted in June 2020, close to 78 percent of respondents in Japan stated that they could not participate in swimming from February to May in 2020 due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) outbreak. Sports and physical exercises that are mainly performed in public or private sports facilities occupied the highest positions in the ranking, indicating a clear impact of the business suspension of those facilities after the outbreak.
As there were clusters of COVID-19 infection cases confirmed in some of the sports gyms in Japan, the Japanese government requested sports clubs and facilities to suspend businesses in March. The government lifted the request at the end of May.
