Number of active social media users in Ghana 2017-2024
As of January 2024, Ghana registered 7.4 million social media users. This was an increase from 6.6 million in the preceding year. In May 2023, there was an estimated number of 8.7 million Facebook users. This, however, did not exceed the share of WhatsApp users, which reached 83.6 percent of all internet users in the country by the third quarter of 2022. Over the years, the usage of most social media platforms in Ghana has followed an upward trend.
Expanding internet usage
The number of internet users in Ghana reached a total of 15.7 million in January 2021. This represented a penetration rate of 50 percent, meaning that around half of the population had internet access as of 2021. Consequently, revenues generated by internet access were projected to amount to 1.9 billion U.S. dollars in the West African country, following an increasing trend from the preceding years.
Mobile connections and subscriptions
There were more than 43 million mobile connections in Ghana by the beginning of January 2021, most of which were pre-paid connections. In terms of mobile internet users, an estimated number of 17.84 million was registered in the same period. Similarly, in 2019, 134.32 mobile cellular subscriptions per 100 inhabitants were counted, which indicated a rising mobile subscription tendency.
