In 2022, an estimated 16 million cases of acute respiratory infections were reported in Mexico, making them the most common category of illnesses in the country. Urinary tract infections were the second most frequent ailments that year, with 3.2 million cases.
Risk factors
Several factors can cause respiratory infections; however, they can be exacerbated by activities such as smoking in patients with pre-existing health conditions. Though the smoker population in Mexico has generally declined in the last decade, figures still stand as high as 12.4 million in 2020, and were projected to reach nearly 12.6 million by 2025.
Also a heart problem
Smoking can also have detrimental effects on heart health. The second leading cause of death in Mexico in 2021 was heart conditions, with 114 thousand deaths recorded. Demand for lifesaving transplants has also risen as a result. In 2021, 54 patients were placed on the heart transplant waiting list in the North American country, and 25 transplants were performed.
