The total mine production of platinum worldwide amounted to an estimated 180 metric tons in 2023, up from some 170 metric tons in the previous year. Platinum is a soft, heavy, white colored precious metal. It is most commonly used in catalytic converters for automobiles as well as in jewelry. Altogether, the global demand for platinum in 2023 was estimated at 7.5 million ounces.
