Main reasons for the inability to pay rent in Kenya 2020
Between May and June 2020, reduced income, as an effect of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, was the main factor influencing the ability to pay for rent in Kenya. Most of the households (61 percent) mentioned the lowered earnings as the main reason for being unable to make the payment. Nearly 26 percent of respondents attributed the inability to temporary layoffs and closure of businesses. In an attempt to contain the coronavirus spread, Kenya adopted measures such as temporary closure of restaurants and bars, and a dusk-to-dawn nationwide curfew.
