Nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions from frying bacon on a gas stove measured 104 parts per billion (ppb). NO2 is a hazardous air pollutant, and can cause health effects in humans. Children are especially susceptible to toxic gases such as NO2, which increases the risk of asthma and lung infections.
The World Health Organization's indoor one-hour NO2 standard is set at 106 ppb. Often, indoor air pollution is higher than outside due to the air pollutants released from gas ranges.
Measured nitrogen dioxide (NO2) emissions released from gas stoves in 2020, by preparation type
(in parts per billion)
* Parts per billion (ppb) is the number of units of mass of a contaminant per 1000 million units of total mass.
** Gas cooktop - no food emissions range from 82-300 ppb, Gas oven - no food emissions range from 130-546 ppb
