According to a survey conducted in November 2019 about diversity in the workplace, around 27 percent of Japanese respondents were either aware of at least one coworker identifying as a sexual minority or found it to be possible. A majority of approximately 41 percent felt that it was unlikely they had a coworker identifying as LGBT.
The acronym LGBT stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender and has been used since the 1990s. It is an umbrella term for individuals identifying as non-heterosexual or non-cisgender, with the latter meaning that the individual's gender identity does not match their sex assigned at birth.
