The WHO Collaborating Centre for Pharmaceutical Pricing and Reimbursement Policies defined a generic medicine as "a pharmaceutical product (medicine) which has the same qualitative and quantitative composition in active substances and the same pharmaceutical form as the reference medicine, and whose bioequivalence with the reference medicine has been demonstrated by appropriate bioavailability studies" (page 37).
