Fiscal health sub-score of South Africa 2017-2023
In 2023, the fiscal health sub-score on the Economic Freedom Index for South Africa was 5.9. This presented a decrease of 2.2 points from 2022. During the seven years under review, the South African sub-score ranged between 62.6 points in 2019 and 74.6 points in 2018. In comparison to the world average, the sub-score was on par with the results in 2017 and 2018. According to the index, fiscal health in South Africa was considered "moderately free" until 2020. However, it has since declined considerably and is now considered to be repressed.
