Between 2000 and 2020, the sub-score ranged between 61.3 points in 2006 and 91.4 points in 2015. The Economic Freedom Index is co-published by The Wall Street Journal and The Heritage Foundation, and was started in 1994.
The source considers the sub-Saharan Africa region without the North African countries as they are included in the MENA region. However, it is ranked based on the African continent with 52 countries until 2011 and 53 countries from 2012 onwards.
The Economic Freedom Index is divided into 12 variables grouped in four categories:
1) Rule of law: property rights, judicial effectiveness, and government integrity
2) Government size: tax burden, government spending, and fiscal health
3) Regulatory efficiency: business freedom, labor freedom, and monetary freedom
4) Market openness: trade freedom, investment freedom, and financial freedom
