In the period between 2010 and 2020, Russia exported to Mali the highest trend-indicator value (TIV) of arms: 35 million. United Arab Emirates was the second main exporter, accounting for 21 million TIV, while Brazil exported 18 million TIV.
TIV is a measure developed by the source to represent the transfer of military resources rather than the financial value of the transfer.
Cumulative value of arms imports from Mali between 2010 and 2020, by supplier
(in million SIPRI TIV)
The trend-indicator value (TIV) was developed by SIPRI to measure the volume of international transfers of major conventional weapons using a common unit. The TIV is based on the known unit production costs of a core set of weapons and is intended to represent the transfer of military resources rather than the financial value of the transfer.
The source mentioned the following example to better understand the calculation of the TIV value:
''The transfer of newly produced complete weapons systems: In 2017, France delivered 8 Rafale combat aircraft to Egypt. One Rafale is valued at 55 million SIPRI TIV. Therefore the delivery is valued at 440 million SIPRI TIV.''
''Transfer of surplus weapons: In 2017, Germany delivered 6 surplus PzH-2000 self-propelled guns to Croatia. One PzH-2000 is valued at 4.5 million SIPRI TIV and a used version is valued at 1.8 million SIPRI TIV (40 per cent of the value of a new version). Therefore, the delivery is valued at 10.8 million SIPRI TIV
