In 2018, over 160 million total coliform bacteria was found in a sample of 100 milliliter of river water in India's capital territory of Delhi. Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh were the leading states with particularly poor river water quality. On the other hand, the north-eastern state of Sikkim had the best quality of river water in the country.
