In May 2020, the Nissan Leaf was the leading plug-in electric car model in Japan in terms of its share of sales, accounting for 47 percent of the plug-in electric car sales in Japan. The number of electric vehicle registrations peaked in 2018, when 26.5 thousand electric cars were newly registered in Japan.
